Prep is a deeply formative year at Maitland Christian School, laying the groundwork for strong learning habits within a nurturing, Christ-centred environment. Students are introduced to the goodness of God and their place and purpose in His world. Our Prep teachers are intentional in creating authentic opportunities for students to grow spiritually, modelling kindness, forgiveness, patience, respect and a heart that puts others first.
The Prep curriculum gently leads children into the routines and rhythms of school life. At the beginning of the year, teachers introduce short, structured learning times that gradually extend as students grow in confidence and readiness. The curriculum focuses on biblical understanding, social skills, independence, fine and gross motor skills, phonemic awareness, early writing and number formation and foundational numeracy concepts.
Prep Activities
Play is an essential part of each day. Through play, children socialise, test ideas, deepen their understanding of the world, and develop vital interpersonal skills such as cooperation, sharing, turn-taking, negotiation and problem-solving. Fine-motor play such as cutting, drawing, threading, painting, playdough and using tweezers helps strengthen hand muscles and supports children in preparing for writing in Kindergarten.
