Strong academic foundations underpin everything we do. Our teachers use evidence-based explicit instruction to ensure students develop mastery in literacy, numeracy and core content areas. Lessons are structured, clear, and purposeful, with high expectations and responsive support. From early reading and writing through to the development of fluent, confident learners in the upper years, each stage builds systematically on the one before it.
A calm, predictable and supportive environment is essential for effective learning. For this reason, behaviour expectations are taught clearly and consistently, grounded in biblical truth and a belief in each child’s ability to grow in self-control, respect and responsibility. Our staff intentionally guide students in making wise, God-honouring choices.
Primary students enjoy a rich range of opportunities to discover their gifts and grow in confidence. Leadership roles, creative arts, dance, choir, sport and a variety of lunchtime activities provide meaningful ways to serve, contribute and develop new skills.
Curriculum
Every subject in the primary years is purposeful. From literacy and numeracy to biblical studies, sport, and the arts, the curriculum is designed to develop the whole child, academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. Strong foundations in core skills are built through clear, proven teaching methods, while subjects like creative arts, PE, and biblical studies give students the space to discover their gifts, develop their character, and begin to understand their place in God’s unfolding story.
At Maitland Christian School, we are committed to delivering high-quality teaching through the consistent use of explicit instruction-an evidence-based approach that ensures every student can succeed. Lessons are carefully structured using a clear “I Do, We Do, You Do” model, where teachers model new learning step by step, guide students through practice and then support them to apply skills independently. This approach reduces cognitive load, builds confidence and ensures all students achieve their best.
Our lessons are characterised by clear learning intentions, frequent checking for understanding and purposeful practice. Students are actively engaged through questioning, guided discussion and regular review to strengthen memory and deepen understanding.
Biblical Studies
Each day, students participate in a devotion and prayer, along with a dedicated weekly Biblical Studies lesson where they learn about the Bible and how to apply its teachings to their daily lives.A Biblical perspective underpins all Key Learning Areas, helping students to see God’s truth in every aspect of life through the overarching story of Scripture—creation, fall, redemption and restoration. This framework helps students understand the world as God’s good creation, recognise the impact of sin, see God’s plan of salvation through Jesus and live with hope in the restoration of all things.
Literacy
We use a structured synthetic phonics approach to explicitly teach reading and spelling, helping students understand the relationship between sounds and letters so they can confidently read and spell words. Our InitiaLit program (K–2) builds strong foundations in phonemic awareness, decoding, and fluency.In Years 3–6, we extend these skills through a gradual introduction to morphemic spelling, supporting accurate and confident spelling. Students engage in rich novel studies and quality information texts to build comprehension, while writing and grammar are explicitly taught and thoughtfully integrated across learning areas.
Mathematics
Students are taught in streamed groups to ensure learning is targeted at a level that best suits their needs. Lessons are delivered using explicit instruction, supported by daily review and daily fact fluency to strengthen understanding and retention. Our program is aligned with the NSW Mathematics Syllabus, ensuring a strong foundation in essential mathematical knowledge and skills. As students study Mathematics, they explore the order, patterns and logical design of God’s creation, using their God-given abilities to think, reason and problem-solve, and gaining a deeper appreciation of His wisdom, order and unchanging nature.
Science & Technology
Students develop their understanding of God’s created world and the technological world through investigation and problem-solving, building on their natural curiosity and recognising the order and precision of God's creation. Students engage in hands-on learning, asking questions, making observations and testing ideas, with writing integrated to strengthen thinking as they explain and communicate their ideas clearly. As they explore creation, they grow in wonder at His wisdom and use their God-given ability to think, create and care for the world around them.
History & Geography
HSIE encompasses the study of History and Geography, helping students understand the world, its people, places, and how societies have changed over time. Through these studies, students develop critical thinking skills and explore connections between the past, present, and future.From a Christian perspective, students learn that God created a good world, yet the effects of sin have shaped people and societies throughout history. They explore God’s ongoing work of redemption while studying both the successes and failures of individuals and nations. In Geography, students examine God’s creation, considering the physical world and human needs, and are encouraged to act justly, care for creation, and serve others.
Personal Development & Health
Students develop the knowledge and life skills needed to understand themselves, relate positively to others, and make safe and respectful decisions. Grounded in real‑life application, learning focuses on managing emotions, responding to challenges, and contributing to healthy communities. Recognising that each person is created in God’s image, students are encouraged to show dignity, practise reconciliation, take responsibility for their actions, and grow in Christ‑like character, including love, self‑control, and integrity.
Physical Education
Students develop movement skills, coordination and confidence through a range of physical activities, games and sport. They learn to value their physical capabilities, recognising that God has created their bodies with purpose and design, and are encouraged to use their abilities with gratitude and care. Through participation in PE, students develop perseverance, teamwork and self-discipline, learning to honour God through their attitudes, effort and respect for others.
Creative & Practical Arts
Provides students with rich opportunities to explore, express and respond to the world through music, visual arts, dance and drama. Grounded in the understanding that our God is wonderfully creative, students recognise that they are made in His image and therefore have the ability to create, imagine and communicate meaning. Creative Arts nurtures both imagination and discipline, encouraging students to use their God-given gifts to appreciate beauty and engage with the world in purposeful and creative ways.

Growing Beyond the Classroom
Learning extends beyond the classroom. Through a range of leadership and co‑curricular opportunities, primary students are encouraged to develop confidence, responsibility, and a sense of belonging as they discover their strengths and interests.
Leadership Opportunities
Students are given meaningful opportunities to serve others and contribute to school life. Leadership roles include Mini SALT teams for students in Years 3 to 6, where class representatives work together to support the Primary School community, as well as roles such as Library Monitors, House Captains, Sport Monitors, School Captains and Vice Captains. Older students also serve as buddies for Kindergarten students, while opportunities such as the Worship Team and TOPS Band allow students to lead and participate in areas of faith and creativity.
Extra Curricular Opportunities
Across the year, students may choose from a variety of optional activities designed to support creativity, connection, and personal growth. These may include chess club, choir, dance, knitting, debating and public speaking, sporting skill groups, Bible studies, quiet spaces, and lunchtime clubs.Together, these experiences help students grow in confidence and character, build community, and begin to recognise and develop the gifts God has given them.
